Competition Terms & Conditions
The Waterways Storymaking Festival is organised and coordinated by The Waterways Community, and therefore all references apply to both the charity and the event, and therefore interchangeable.
This competition is open to all residents of the UK, except for employees of the Waterways Community, their families or anyone else associated with this competition.
All information detailing how to enter this competition forms part of these terms and conditions. It is a condition of entry that all terms and conditions are adhered to. Submission of an entry will be taken to mean acceptance of these terms and conditions.
The judges’ decisions (whether in relation to determining any shortlists, runners up, or winners) are final. No correspondence will be entered into regarding such decisions.
Submissions should be made online via The Storymaking Festival website only. Image files (from cameras, digital cameras, smartphones and video cameras and they can be a landscape or portrait image, a minimum of 300dpi and 4000 pixels in length as compressed jpeg file of maximum 10Mb).
Only two photographs per person may be submitted.
Only one video entry per person no longer than 4 minutes in length.
Please supply your name, address, a contact telephone number, email address and where the image was taken. All images must have a title. We regret that we are unable to accept postal submissions.
The content of the submission must be honest, legal and appropriate for public performance and The Waterways Community is the final arbiter of this criteria and reserves the right to refuse any submission which in its opinion do not meet these criteria.
Submissions must be received by 4th March 2022. Late, incomplete or corrupt entries will not be accepted.
Entrants under the age of 16 must obtain the consent of a parent or guardian prior to submitting any images.
Images submitted must be the work of the individual submitting them and must not have been published elsewhere (excluding social media) or have won a prize in any other photographic or digital image/ sound recording competition.
All images entered must celebrate your experiences of waterways which include rivers, coastlines, marine and maritime environments, and what they meant to your family in the past and to you now. There is a limit of a maximum of 2 entries per person from photographs please give each image a title. For video and film the limit is one per person of no more than 4 minutes duration.
It is the responsibility of each entrant to ensure that any images they submit have been taken with the consent of anyone who is identifiable, or owns any property in that image or the consent of their parent/guardian if they are under 16 and that they have been advised of the purpose of the submission and that their photograph may be published by The Waterways Community. Should the image be shortlisted, you will be contacted to provide written consent for use by the individual (or parent). The photograph can only go through to judging of the shortlist with this consent.
Entrants must ensure that the images they are submitting are their own work, that they own the copyright and that they do not infringe the copyright or other rights of any third party or any laws.
Entrants will retain copyright and moral rights in their submitted images however, by entering, all entrants:
(a) grant The Waterways Community non-exclusive rights to use the images on their website, newsletters and social media sites.
(b) grant The Waterways Community non-exclusive rights to use any of the images submitted to promote future competitions within a ten-year period of the winners of the competition being announced;
(c) agree that the uses referred to above may include publishing, displaying or otherwise reproducing the images provided such use is for the purposes of promoting the competition or similar future competitions only; and
(d) agree that The Waterways Community may contact them using the contact details they provide to discuss potential use of the images beyond promotion of the competition. Such discussion and negotiation will be independent from the competition and will not affect entrants’ chances of winning.
The Waterways Community will endeavour to credit the photographer/creator when their image is used and or published by The Waterways Community.
The judging for the competition will be to determine the most visually appealing interpretations of the competition theme.
Shortlisted entrants will be notified by email before the Award Event. A list of the winners and runners-up will be on the Storymaking Festival and Waterways Community websites and social media channels following the Awards Event. If a winner cannot be contacted or is not available, The Storymaking Festival and Waterways Community reserves the right to select the first runner-up from the remaining shortlisted entries as the winner.
The overall winners of the 2022 Waterways Storymaking Festival Photography Video Diary or Short Film Competition will see their image shown in various places as part of the promotion of the Festival.
The winners may be asked to take part in publicity and their name may be published on The Storymaking Festival and the Waterways Community websites, as well as wider media reporting on the competition.
UK law applies and the exclusive jurisdiction of the UK Courts shall prevail.
